Socialization: What exactly are homeschoolers missing?

I'm just going to say, I love this article. This is how I feel about the "socialization" question, put into words that I couldn't vocalize. I've always wondered why people thought homeschoolers didn't socialize. It still puzzles me. But, nevertheless, it's the first thing folks ask! Socialization: What exactly are homeschoolers missing? Seriously, school socializing is nothing like real world socializing. And I can't tell you how many times I had a teacher (or my mom!) tell me "School is not for socializing, it's for learning". Ok then.

4/8/12 - 4/14/12 school update

Well last week was one of my "filler" weeks. So we didn't do a MFW unit, but we did some other stuff. Everyday we did our calendar and our number chart. I let Marlee pick one poem out of A Child's Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson everyday for me to read aloud to her. We also practiced (and she learned!) the first verse of Amazing Grace. She practiced writing her last name and we read the original Winnie the Pooh book. We also rowed The ABC Bunny using Before Five in a Row. We planted some lettuce and carrots, but the carrots never sprouted. Lettuce might make it though! We'll see! Overall, the week was good and we still got a lot done even though it wasn't a "normal" week. This week is our off week and next week we will start Unit 1 of MFW, Ss Sun!

second week of Kindy!

Wow, we finished our second week of Kindergarten with Marlee today! It's been so much fun. The first ten days of this curriculum (My Father's World) is very easy and gentle. It familarizes them with the alphabet and creation, because that is the foundation for the rest of the units. We are trying out a 3 week on, 1 week off schedule. So for 3 weeks we are doing MFW or a combo of MFW and some other activities I have to go along with it, then we will have a week off (of formal stuff, we all know learning happens 24/7!). Of course we have extra weeks for Christmas, vacations, etc. Lots of flex time ;-) If we stick to this schedule, we will finish up around the beginning of March 2013. I'm going to try to do a weekly post about what we are doing. Hopefully, I will stick to it!
